Hua Shang went to Barnard College. There, she discovered her passion for writing and filmmaking, even though she graduated with a BA in Political Economy.

Her love for storytelling led her to Los Angeles, where she completed her MFA in screenwriting at American Film Institute Conservatory.

Her feature screenplay FLY was placed among the "Top 20%" of 2017 Academy Nicholl competition entries. Her feature DO PLANTS TALK TO EACH OTHER has made it to the second round for the 2021 Sundance Feature Lab. Her pilot AS AMERICAN AS FORTUNE COOKIES was selected to workshop in 2018 Athena Film Festival TV Lab and a Semifinalist in 2020 Atlanta Film Festival, 2018 Humanitas college comedy fellowship and has made it to the second round for the 2019 Sundance Episodic Lab. Her spec for the show TRANSPARENT and MR. ROBOT advanced to the Second Round in the Sitcom Spec category at the 2017/2018 Austin Film Festival.
